NASA Loses Contact with Its Opportunity Rover on Mars

NASA’s Opportunity rover on Mars has lost touch with its handlers back on Earth, probably due to a low-power condition brought on by a chokingly thick dust storm. The storm is covering an area of 14 million square miles, or a quarter of the Red Planet, NASA said today in a mission update.
The solar-powered rover has been in operation for nearly 15 years — but if its batteries dip below 24 volts of electrical charge, it’s programmed to put nearly all its systems into sleep mode and wait until the batteries are sufficiently charged up. NASA’s other active Mars rover, Curiosity, is better able to cope with the darkening storm because its power comes from a plutonium-fueled generator.

Mission managers are scheduled to discuss Opportunity’s prospects during a teleconference at 1:30 p.m. ET (10:30 a.m. PT) Wednesday. Stay tuned, and listen in.
When former The Simpsons guest star Stephen Hawking passed in March, he left behind a lifetime worth of invaluable contributions to the world of theoretical astrophysics. Aside from his distinguished life’s work, Hawking left behind his last unpublished paper which simplifies the mind-bending concept of the multiverse by reaching the conclusion that there exists a […]
UFO headlines broke into mainstream news last year when it was revealed that the Pentagon had funded a $22 million research project known as the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program (AATIP). The program had connections to aerospace entrepreneur Robert Bigelow, a common subject of conspiracy theories alleging that the U.S. government or private contractors hare […]
It’s rare when a species goes extinct and people are glad to see it go. While that might be the case if the species is a mosquito or a rat, big cats are generally missed when gone. That wasn’t the case 25 years ago with the Zanzibar leopard. When they were declared extinct in the […]
